Hill Hoping For A Title Shot With Win Over Gadelha
Since the start of 2019, Angela Hill has reconfigured her career. She is also looking to change her place in the UFC’s strawweight division.
Hill (12-7) will be fighting Claudia Gadelha at UFC on ESPN 8 on May 16 from inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville. The 33-year-old will be fighting in her first contest since February, and third overall in 2020. This will be her seventh fight since 2019 began, something that has made her a unique asset in the UFC.
If she were to win on Saturday, Hill, ranked right outside the UFC’s strawweight rankings, would have won four in a row. “Overkill” believes by beating Gadelha (17-4), ranked sixth overall, she will earn her way up the line and become closer to a title opportunity.
“I think right now, the strawweight division has been turning over a lot,” Hill stated to MMA Junkie. “I don’t remember how many fights (champion Zhang) Weili won before she got a title shot, but it wasn’t that many – at least not that many ranked opponents that she beat. So I feel like a win over Claudia is just going to shoot me up to the top. So I definitely feel a little lucky with the fact that I was able to get this matchup right now.”
The current UFC Strawweight Champion is Weili Zhang. She beat Danielle Taylor, Jessica Aguilar, and Tecia Torres to earn a shot at Jessica Andrade for the title. Only Torres (#12) is a ranked fighter.
Hill has recently beaten Ariane Carnelossi, Hannah Cifers, and Loma Lookboonmee. She also holds a win over Jodie Esquibel. Gadelha last fought in July 2019, beating Randa Markos via unanimous decision. Although she hasn’t fought since then, Gadelha is still 4-2 in her last six. Given Hill’s streak and how she has won her fights, she could very well be close to knocking on the champions door.
“I feel like in normal circumstances, I would have had to fight maybe a top 10 to 15 fighter and then Claudia if I did well. But I feel like it’s a good matchup for me, especially how I’m feeling in the cage and in the gym right now. A win over her would be a great way to argue that I deserve a title shot,” Hill went on to say.
