Holly Holm-Irene Aldana, Derek Brunson-Edmen Shahbazyan Reportedly Set For August 1 UFC Event

The road back to bantamweight glory has begun for Holly Holm. According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Holm will be headlining the UFC’s first August event of the year. On the first of the month, she will face off against Irene Aldana.

Holm (13-5) will be fighting for the first time since January when she beat Raquel Pennington via unanimous decision at UFC 246. It was a rebound fight following a loss to Amanda Nunes for the UFC Bantamweight Title at UFC 239 in July 2019. “The Preacher’s Daughter” is 3-2 in her last five fights but 3-5 in her last eight.

The former boxer and UFC Bantamweight Champion will look to get back into contention with a win.

Aldana (12-5) is on a two-fight win streak and is 5-1 in her last six. “Robles” went 3-1 in 2019, with wins against Bethe Correia, Vanessa Melo, and Ketlen Vieira. The Viera win was via KO at UFC 245 and helped secure her as a top contender.

Holm (#2) and Aldana (#5) are ranked high in the UFC’s bantamweight rankings. A win by either may very well present a challenge to Nunes.

Another bout booked for the show is Derek Brunson v. Edmen Shahbazyan in a middleweight bout. Brunson (20-7) is on a two-fight win streak. The 36-year-old beat Elias Theodorou and Ian Heinisch via unanimous decision in 2019. The latter fight was in August and a fight with him and Shahbazyan has attempted to be booked multiple times.

Shahbazyan (11-0) is perfect so far in his UFC career. Debuting on Dana White’s Contender Series, “The Golden Boy” has won three fights in 2019. His last bout was a knockout win over Brad Tavares at UFC 244 back in November.

The original fight between the two was booked for UFC 248 on March 7. It was rescheduled to April 11 but was ultimately cut as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Both fighters are neck and neck in the UFC’s bantamweight standings, with Brunson ranked eighth and Shahbazyan ranked ninth.

The UFC’s latest event is expected to take place inside the APEX Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
