Hopeful Jose Ramirez Looking To Finally Clash With Viktor Postol This Summer
It may take almost exactly a year for fans to see Jose Ramirez return to the boxing ring. At least, that is what the WBC and WBO Light-Welterweight Champion is planning for.
Boxing Scene has reported that Ramirez (25-0) will get his chance to face Viktor Postol (31-2) sometime in the third week of July. This comes after Top Rank stated the promotion will be scheduling events starting on June 9. Signs became further evident that Ramirez would be able to train and fight after the Nevada Athletic Commission lifted the ban on combat sports within the state.
Both fighters were supposed to fight in China earlier in the year, but the bout was postponed due to the coronavirus heavily affecting the area. They were then booked for May in California, but it was once again postponed due to the pandemic growing in America. Top Rank’s Bob Arum wanted to hold events in the summer and was looking to find ways to have them without an audience. With the recent ruling, Arum’s dream could become a reality.
Ramirez is coming off of a TKO-win over Maurice Hooker back in July 2019. He won the WBO Super-Welterweight Title to go along with his WBC belt. The 27-year-old won the WBC belt back in 2018, beating Amir Iman for the vacant title.
Postol is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Mohamed Mimoune back in April 2019 to become the mandatory challenger. He is on a two-fight win streak following a 1-2 record from 2016 to the middle of 2018.
The reason for the late date is a result of visa and training issues. Gyms have been closed for a while and may open up soon. Regarding Postol, he is in Ukraine. The United States lifted the travel ban for athletes, so Postol has clearance to enter. If everything goes well with the process, a huge fight will be able to be produced.
Do you think the bout between Postol and Ramirez will actually happen?
