Hughie Fury Signs with Hearn, Matchroom
Former British heavyweight champion and WBO heavyweight title challenger Hughie Fury is the latest to sign a deal with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
Per a report from Boxing Scene, the deal and next fight for Fury, the younger cousin of former unified heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, is expected to become official at a press conference within the coming week.
“I’m over the moon to be signing promotionally with Eddie and joining a stable as strong as Matchroom,” said Fury. “I feel with Matchroom’s backing I can kick on now and really fulfill my potential. Watch this space because it’ll be exciting times over the next couple of years.”
Fury debuted in 2013 and fought 12 times that year, winning all of his bouts. He went on to improve his record to 20-0 before a break of more than a year due to a skin condition that caused acne and excessive fatigue.
Fury returned in September 2017 to challenge Joseph Parker for the WBO Heavyweight Title, dropping a decision for his first career loss. Fury claimed the British Heavyweight Title with a fifth-round TKO win over Sam Sexton before losing an IBF title eliminator to Kubrat Pulev in October 2018.
“I’m delighted to welcome Hughie Fury to the Matchroom Boxing team,” Hearn said. “At such a young age Hughie has been fearless taking on the World’s contenders, facing Joseph Parker for the World title at just 23 and recently traveling to Bulgaria to take on Kubrat Pulev on his back yard. This experience will be priceless and I’m excited to see him back in a big fight soon at a time when the division is hotter than ever.”
Fury picked up two wins in the span of two months recently, knocking out Chris Norrad in May before a stoppage of former WBC champion Samuel Peter in July.
“This is fantastic news for Hughie,” Peter Fury, Hughie’s father and trainer, added. “People forget he’s still only 24 years old — a baby for a Heavyweight. Signing with Matchroom gives him to perfect platform to achieve his goal of rising to the top of the heavyweight division and I have complete confidence in him doing just that.”
