“Governor Penn will bring Hawaii its first NFL football team and three UFC fights a year. It’s about time!”
The closest the NFL has been to Hawaii is for the Pro Bowl, where that season’s best players compete against one another representing their respective conferences and teams.
Penn’s suggestion for the UFC in the state comes just a week before Bellator heads back to Hawaii for the third and fourth time for a two-day event.
The 43-year-old was released from the UFC in September 2019. His release followed a video that showed him engaging in a bar brawl where he was knocked out. Before that, the promotion was looking to book a fight between him and Nik Lentz.
Penn, who debuted in the UFC in 2006, is tied for the UFC record of longest losing streak with Sam Alvey at seven in a row.
His last outing was against veteran Clay Guida, who he lost by unanimous decision in May 2019.
The former lightweight and welterweight champion was considered one of the top pound-for-pound mixed martial artists early in his career. He is also considered one of the sport’s pioneers.
