Inoue Drops McDonnell In First Round

It was a quick night at the office for Naoya Inoue, as he dropped Jamie McDonnell in the first round of their WBA Bantamweight title showdown in Tokyo.

The “Monster” lived up to his nickname, as he would send McDonnell down to the canvas twice within the first two minutes of the fight, working the body to lead to a crushing left hook to the body.

The left hook would rear its ugly head, as it would be the closing blow to drop McDonnell to the canvas again, forcing referee Luis Pabon to stop the fight 1:52 into the opening round.

In only his 16th fight as a pro, Inoue has become a world champion in a third weight class, with prior reigns as WBC light flyweight and WBO super flyweight champion.

Prior to the KO loss to the Japanese native, McDonnell had not lost a fight since back-to-back decision defats to Chris Edwards in December 2007 and Lee Haskins in March 2008.
