Inoue Gets Off The Canvas To Knock Out Nery

Naoya Inoue stopped Luis Nery in the sixth round, recovering from a first-round knockdown to remain the Undisputed Super Bantamweight Champion.

The champion was making the first defense of his undisputed title, which he secured after stopping Marlon Tapales in his last fight. However, it was the worst possible start. Nery began to use his jab well as he settled down quickly. Once he was in his groove, Nery made Inoue pay with a solid left hook on the inside, sending the champion to the canvas.

It was an eye-opener for Inoue. The champion responded well in the second. Nery attempted to press home his advantage, throwing another left hook. The punch missed, with Inoue landing his left hook on the counter to score his knockdown in an even two rounds.

The tide began to turn in Inoue’s favor. The champion played to the crowd, goading Nery as he combined his punching with some showboating.

Inoue upped the tempo in the fifth round. He connected with a left hook and a right hook counter upstairs. The champion then landed a left hook to send Nery to the canvas. Nery made it to the bell, but the writing was on the wall.

Inoue ended proceedings in the sixth with his trademark shot: the right hand. The champion pushed Nery on the back foot, landing a massive right hand to send him through the ropes. The referee waved off the fight, as Inoue extended his record to 27-0.

“This is the first Tokyo Dome boxing event in 34 years, I’m so happy to be here. A big surprise happened in the first round!” You can say that again. Actually, that happening gave me good motivation and attention. I don’t remember anything that my dad told me during the intermission [after the knockdown], but that gave me motivation and focus until the end of the fight,” Inoue said
