Invicta FC Announces Phoenix Series 3

When fighters run the gauntlet, it can result in a number of entertaining possibilities. Invicta FC is looking to bring back the Phoenix Series, this time for the bantamweight division. The one-night tournament will take place on March 6 inside Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

Tournaments prior to Phoenix Series 3 featured the strawweights and flyweights of Invicta. Brianna van Buren won the first tournament back in May, beating Kailin Curran via submission to win the Invicta FC Strawweight Championship. The second event, in September, saw Miranda Maverick submit DeAnna Bennett in the flyweight tournament final.

“We have something very special with the PHOENIX SERIES© format and, after the strawweights and flyweights gave us two memorable tournaments last year, we very excited to see what the bantamweights can do in this unique environment,” Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp stated in a press release.

What exactly is the Phoenix Series? It is an eight-women, single-elimination tournament. For one night, the top prospects fight to determine who the best in each division is. The quarter and semifinals are contested as a single five-minute round. The finals pit the top competitors in a three-round, five-minute fight.

The tournament will feature Kerri Kenneson (3-2), Brittney Victoria (3-1), Erin Harpe (2-0), Taneisha Tennant (2-0), Claire Guthrie (1-0), Hope Chase (2-1), Auttumn Norton (1-1) and Taylor Guardado, who will make her pro debut. Guardado has experience with superstar fighters, as she fought Ronda Rousey and Raquel Pennington in the amateurs.

“We are looking for one of these eight women to seize the moment,” Knapp went on to say. “We’ve purposely invited athletes who are in the earlier stages of their careers to compete in the tournament. This is the chance for one of them to make the MMA world take notice.”

The winner of this tournament may very well face the winner of the main event of the card. Lisa Verzosa (5-0) will face off against Julija Stoliarenko (8-3-1) for the vacant Invicta FC Bantamweight Title. The card will also feature reserve matches in the case of an emergency. Serena DeJesus (1-1) will face Julia Ottolino (1-0) and Mitzi Merry (2-1) faces Morgan Hickam (1-2).

Phoenix Series 3 will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Here is the full fight card for the event:
