Is A Fight Between Anderson Silva And Conor McGregor Possible?

The name Conor McGregor brings something out in people that require them to challenge him. They know they are in for a big fight and a potential big purse. At one point that was what many thought of when Anderson Silva was dominating the middleweight division.

Now, Silva is looking to take advantage of McGregor’s name.

Recently, McGregor (22-4) has caused a raucous with his “MMA GOAT” rankings. The “Notorious” one put Silva at number one, discussing the arsenal Silva has and the finishes that have resulted from them. That drew the attention of Silva, who challenged McGregor to a bout via Instagram.

“I have immense admiration for the great athlete that Conor is and I believe that a super fight would go down in the history of the sport, neither of us need to prove anything to anyone; I believe that fans of the UFC and of this sport would like to watch this great martial arts spectacle, it would be fantastic to test my martial arts skills against him!!”

In his prime, Silva (34-10, 1NC) was considered one of the greatest fighters in the world. “The Spider”, a former PRIDE Welterweight Champion, holds the records for most knockdowns in UFC (18) and title fight (10) history. He also has the longest win streak in UFC history at 16 and title reign at 2,347 days. Beating Rich Franklin for the UFC Middleweight Title in 2006, Silva held onto the title until 2013, when Chris Weidman shocked the world.

Since then, Silva has gone 1-5 with one no-contest in seven fights. He is on a two-fight losing streak, facing his equal Israel Adesanya at UFC 234. Losing via unanimous decision, Silva came back in May 2019 and injured his leg against Jared Cannonier.

McGregor, having seen the message, tweeted that he accepts the bout. He also asked fans if they are ready for some bombs to be thrown.

A former UFC Lightweight and Featherweight Champion, McGregor has expressed a desire to fight in the welterweight division. After losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, McGregor rebounded with a 40-second win over Donald Cerrone this past January. It was his first win since 2016.

According to MMA Fighting, Silva suggested a catchweight bout between the two at 176.37 pounds. Back in 2016, there were rumblings of a Silva-McGregor bout, but nothing came to fruition.
