Is Luke Campbell A Good Fight For Ryan Garcia?
Ryan Garcia has been waiting for his opportunity to show he is the real deal. Facing a fighter like Luke Campbell may very well be the bout he needs to prove himself.
Recently, Garcia (20-0) accepted the World Boxing Council’s order for him to compete for the WBC Lightweight Title. He is now scheduled to face Luke Campbell sometime this year for the interim belt. The winner of that fight would face off against WBC Lightweight Champion Devin Haney. Garcia had a choice between Campbell and the WBO’s pick of Emmanuel Tagoe. Golden Boy President Eric Gomez believes Campbell is the right move for the 21-year-old as he continues to pick up momentum.
“We are very excited, this is the type of fight that Ryan wants,” Gomez told Sky Sports. “This is a real fight. Campbell is a top fighter, he really is. He came close to beating Jorge Linares – the only reason he lost is because of a knock-down early in their fight. He is a legitimate threat, a very good fighter, an Olympic gold medallist.
Garcia has won seven fights since 2018. He won the WBO-NABO and WBC Silver Lightweight Titles against Romero Duno in November via TKO. “KingRy” won his last bout in February, hitting Francisco Fonseca with a devastating knockout punch.
The 32-year-old Campbell has fought for lightweight gold twice; he lost to Linares in 2017 for the WBA Lightweight TItle and lost to Vasiliy Lomachenko this past August for the WBA, WBO, and WBC Lightweight TItles. Before the Lomachenko loss, Campbell was on a three-fight win streak. Campbell believes that he will be a true challenge for Garcia and that he can come out on top.
Garcia has wanted Golden Boy to challenge and pay him, as he believes he is worth it. The latter request has resulted in tensions between himself and the combination of Golden Boy and DAZN. Gomez believes Garcia will be able to show who he is as a fighter against Campbell, win or lose.
“This will test Ryan. If he beats Campbell then he will get a lot of credit,” Gomez went on to say. “But it is very dangerous for Ryan. These are the type of fights that he needs in his career.”
