Is Patrick Teixeira On Jermell Charlo’s Radar?
Jermell Charlo has weighed in on whether or not Patrick Teixeira is on his radar.
Charlo holds all the major championships at 154 pounds except one. Charlo is the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBC Light-Middleweight Champion. He added the WBA and IBF gold to his mantle by scoring an eighth-round knockout victory over Jeison Rosario. The lone remaining 154-pound title that Charlo doesn’t have a claim to is the WBO gold, which belongs to Teixeira.
Many have wondered if Charlo is interested in going after Teixeira’s title to further showcase his dominance in the light-middleweight division. Speaking to reporters after his victory over Rosario, Charlo said he isn’t convinced that Teixeira wants to share the ring with him (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“De La Hoya guy got the other belt,” Charlo said in reference to Teixeira. “If he wanna put his – with victories like that and total domination, I don’t think they [want me]. I got bad intentions, man. I come to ruin they health. Like Mike [Tyson] said, I wanna ruin they health. I don’t care about no belts. I don’t care about none of that. They don’t wanna fight me. I’m different. I punch for real.”
Like Charlo, Teixeira has just one loss in his pro boxing career. The difference is, Charlo’s defeat was a decision, while Teixeira was stopped via TKO. Back on November 30, 2019, Teixeira captured the interim WBO Light-Middleweight Title against Carlos Adames. He was later promoted to the main champion.
Brian Castano is the mandatory WBO challenger. The organization plans on enforcing that status. There were rumblings of Teixeira possibly facing Tim Tszyu but WBO President Paco Valcarcel seemingly put a halt to that idea.
