Is The BMF Belt On The Line At UFC 251?
The stage is set for one of the top welterweight title fights of the last few years. At UFC 251 this Saturday, July 11, Kamaru Usman will defend his UFC Welterweight Title against Jorge Masvidal. On only a few day’s notice, Masvidal will look to prove why he is the BMF Champion.
Speaking of that belt, Usman has been looking to take the BMF Title from Masvidal, saying that he has been drinking his own kool-aid when it comes to what the belt means. UFC President Dana White recently told TMZ how bad Usman wants to take the title from him, even though the title is not on the line.
“It’s not, it’s not on the line,” White ended up saying. “Usman wants it to be on the line, so bad, he will not stop texting me saying, ‘I don’t understand why this belt isn’t on the line. This guy is running around saying he’s the BMF Champ. I want to squash it all. He’s not going to win my title, and I’m going to take his BMF Belt.’ Believe me, Usman has not stopped terrorizing me about this.”
Masvidal (35-13) last fought at UFC 244 in November, beating Nate Diaz via TKO for the BMF Title. The build-up to the fight saw both say they are the toughest to ever fight in the octagon. Inside The World’s Most Famous Arena, President Donald Trump was there as well as The Rock, who presented the belt to both men and put it on Masvidal.
White would end up calling the bout this Saturday the “People’s Fight” after Gilbert Burns had to back out of UFC 251 after testing positive for COVID-19. He called Masvidal “brilliant” for being able to jump in at the right time. This is especially true considering how Masvidal has been in a battle with management over pay.
White eventually elaborated on the status of the BMF Title, essentially stating the title was retired.
“That was like a one and done, the BMF Title,” White went on to say.
Masvidal is currently on a three-fight win streak and is 6-2 in his last eight fights. Usman (16-1) is on a fifteen-fight win streak dating back to 2013. He beat Tyron Woodley for the title at UFC 235 and defended it against Colby Covington at UFC 245 in December.
“Fight Island” will be in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. The co-main event of UFC 251 will be Alexander Volkanovski v. Max Holloway in a rematch for the UFC Featherweight Title. Another title fight on the card will be Petr Yan v. Jose Aldo for the vacant UFC Bantamweight Title.
