Is There A New Date Set For Joe Smith Jr. Vs. Eleider Alvarez?
A few weeks after the bout was postponed, Eleider Alvarez and Joe Smith Jr. appear to finally be ready to face one another.
Alvarez’s promoter, Yvon Michel, ended up telling ESPN that both competitors are ready to go by the third week of August. The two had a planned bout for July 16 but was nixed when Alvarez (25-1) had to back out due to an injured shoulder while training.
“I sent a medical report on Alvarez’s situation early last week confirming that the inflammation is gone after treatment, the pain is minimum,” Michel stated. “He’s going to start sparring next week, everything is under control. He’s fit and ready to fight by mid-August.
“So the message I got from Top Rank is that the fight will be rescheduled for some time between Aug. 20 and Aug. 22, depending on the schedule.”
Smith (25-3) is 2-2 in his last four fights. “The Irish Bomber” last fought in January, beating Jesse Hart via split decision. A former WBC International Light-Heavyweight Champion, Smith has only fought for a world title once. Back in March, the 30-year-old lost to Dmitry Bivol for the WBA Light-Heavyweight Title.
“It’s not ideal, it’s not what we wanted,” said Smith promotor Joe DeGuardia. “We think it’s unfortunate it got pushed back in the first place, however, we’re realists. I just want this fight to take place, and we’re going to do what we have to do to get Joe ready and have this fight.”
