Is There A Plan For Mikaela Mayer Within The Super-Featherweight Title Scene?
It did not take long for Mikaela Mayer to get booked against a champion from Matchroom Boxing. While it isn’t Terri Harper, a win could bring her one step closer to her goal.
Boxing Scene was the first to report that the WBO (World Boxing Organization) has ordered a fight between Mayer and WBO Super-Featherweight Champion Ewa Brodnicka. If an agreement cannot be made between the two, the case will be subject to a purse bid hearing by the middle of the month.
“Please be advised the parties have ten (10) days upon issuance of this notice to negotiate and reach an agreement for the WBO Female. Jr. Lightweight Mandatory Championship Contest between WBO Female Champion Ms. Ewa Brodnicka and Ms. Mikaela [Mayer].
“The minimum acceptable bid for the WBO Female Championship Contests is $10,000 (Ten Thousand Dollars),” stated Luis Batista-Salas, chairman of the WBO Championship Committee. “Any of these parties involved may request a purse bid procedure at any time during the negotiation process.”
Just signing a promotional deal with Matchroom, Brodnicka (19-0) won the WBO Super-Featherweight Title (then interim) in 2017 against Irma Adler. Brodnicka has defended the title six times. Brodnicka last fought in March, beating Djemilla Gontaruk via unanimous decision.
Eddie Hearn’s intentions were for her to face off against the winner of the “Matchroom Fight Camp” bout on Friday, August 7 between WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight Champion Terri Harper and Natasha Jonas.
All plans took a step back during a time when Mikaela Mayer has been advocating for her to fight Harper (or Jonas). She believes she has earned a title shot after beating Helen Joseph not that long ago. Bob Arum even stated her next fight would be for a title. Mayer won’t accept playing second fiddle when she has earned her opportunity.
Harper’s dreams are to fight in America and face Mayer. Considered delayed, a win on Friday could end up putting her back on track.
Harper and Jonas will be fighting in the backyard of Matchroom Boxing’s U.K. office. The card will air on DAZN and start at 2 p.m. ET.
