At the top of boxing’s welterweight division is Errol Spence Jr., someone waiting to get back inside a boxing ring like everyone else. If all goes according to plan, a bout previously expected for this past January may take place before 2020 ends.
The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger is the first to report that Spence will face off against Danny Garcia sometime in November. The Premier Boxing Champions-produced fight would air on PPV and is expected to be inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. This is according to ESPN. All of this depends on the current situation surrounding the coronavirus.
This would be the first fight back for Spence (26-0) since his car accident back in October. Charged with a DUI, Spence wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. He suffered lacerations to his face and damage to his teeth. A few months later, Spence was adamant that he does not need or want a tune-up fight when he returns.
“I don’t need no tuneup nothing I’m a shark so put me in that deep water where I belong. That’s where I belong don’t put me don’t put me nowhere in the pool. Put me in my natural habitat. I already told Al (Haymon) I can get my feet wet with the top guys,” Spence stated.
Spence turned professional in 2012. He beat Kell Brook back in 2017 to win the IBF Welterweight Title. In a Fight of the Year contender in September, “The Truth” won the WBC Welterweight Title from Shawn Porter. He was expected to face off against Garcia back in January before he was in the accident.
Garcia (36-2) is 3-2 in his last five fights. A former Light-Welterweight Champion, Garcia won the WBC Welterweight Title in 2016 against Robert Guerrero. He lost the title when facing Keith Thurman and ended up losing to Porter for the vacant title a year later. “Swift” beat Adrian Granados via TKO in April 2019 and recently beat Ivan Redkach via unanimous decision back in January. There was a recent discussion for him to move up to 154.
All eyes will be on Spence as he looks to make the ultimate comeback following the ultimate setback.
