Is There An Update On George Kambosos Jr. Vs. Lee Selby?
It appears we will have to wait a while to see a fight to determine an IBF Featherweight Title contender.
ESPN is reporting that a bout between Lee Selby and George Kambosos Jr. has been canceled. Scheduled for October 3 for Matchroom Boxing, the fight is off and will return to purse bids. This comes after Boxing Scene learned that terms of the deal would not be renegotiated. Kambosos’s side wanted $150,000 but Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn wanted it cut down to $100,000.
It appears a 33% reduction is what Hearn is looking for. Lou DiBella, promoter to Kambosos, may be interested in taking his business s elsewhere.
“Eddie didn’t want to leave the deal in place and we didn’t want to take a reduction to go to Wales when George is higher in the ratings than Selby and we have the (60-40) advantage in a purse bid,” DiBella stated. “So why take a gigantic pay cut when we weren’t getting that much in the first place? It was a substantial reduction and we weren’t willing to do it. So I think we’re going to go out there and try to do it with an Australian network in Australia.”
Selby (28-2) made his professional debut in 2008. A former British and Commonwealth Featherweight Champion, “Lightning” won the IBF Featherweight Title from Evgeny Gradovich back in 2015. He defended it four times before losing the title to Josh Warrington (the current champion) in 2018 via split decision. Since then he has won two in a row, last beating Ricky Burns in October.
Kambosos (18-0) made his debut in 2013. A former Australian Lightweight Champion, “Ferocious” fought three times in 2019. His last bout was a split decision win against Mickey Bey in December.
The two were supposed to fight on June 27 before the coronavirus pandemic nixed those plans.
