Is There An Update On Gervonta Davis Vs. Leo Santa Cruz?
“Showtime Championship Boxing” appears to be back in full force. According to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz are expected to clash on October 24.
The event, scheduled at 130 pounds, will be a PPV. Davis recently fought at 135 while Santa Cruz just moved to 130. Partnering with Premier Boxing Champions, Showtime will be producing events from inside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. There will be no fans allowed to attend events.
There has been some interest in a fight between the two before, as they wanted to work something out since December 2019. Back in May, Davis and Santa Cruz were close to facing one another, but COVID-19 continued to delay plans.
Davis (23-0) is the WBA Lightweight Champion. He beat an injured Yuriorkis Gamboa via TKO in December for the vacant title. Before that, He dominated the super-featherweight division, holding onto the WBA and IBF Super-Featherweight Belts. “Tank” has 22 wins via knockout.
There was doubt if Davis would be involved in a bout this year after he was charged with a simple battery domestic violence in Florida. His boxing license was not suspended, however.
Santa Cruz (37-1-1) is on a five-fight win streak. He won the WBA Super-Featherweight Championship by beating Miguel Flores via unanimous decision back in November. The 31-year-old beat Abner Mares to win the WBA Featherweight Title and regained it from Carl Frampton after an initial loss, Santa Cruz’s first and only, to him. He has defended it three times.
Showtime is expected to reveal its full return lineup today, July 22 around noon.
