Is There An Update On Liam Williams vs. Andrew Robinson?
Could Liam Williams vs. Andrew Robinson be in jeopardy?
Williams is scheduled to put his British Middleweight Championship on the line against Robinson inside the BT Sport Studio in London, England on October 10. This is a mandatory defense for Williams but the fight could be in jeopardy. That’s because Williams is the mandatory challenger for Demetrius Andrade’s WBO Middleweight Title.
Queensberry Promotions head honcho Frank Warren told iFL TV that whether or not Williams goes through with his title defense against Robinson could hinge on a ruling from the WBO (h/t Boxing Scene).
“The fight is on, but it may be subject to the WBO stating that [Williams] has to withdraw from the fight because of the regulations of the purse bids [for the world title challenge against Andrade]. We’re working on that at the moment, but if he has to withdraw then he’ll do that because there is no way I can let him loose his position against Andrade. He wants the fight, he’s been out a long time, and we want to make sure it happens, but that’s all down to the WBO and where we are with them and Andrade,” Warren said.
Williams was last seen in action back on December 21, 2019. He defeated Alantez Fox via TKO to capture the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight Title. It was the sixth victory in a row for Williams. He hasn’t suffered a loss since November 11, 2017, against Lee Smith in their rematch.
It would be a tough break for Robinson if he can’t get the bout with Williams. Robinson is the winner of three straight and is coming off a TKO victory over Eric Nwankwo. His last defeat occurred back on June 9, 2018.
