Is There An Update On Tony Ferguson’s Next Fight?
Tony Ferguson’s next opponent may have been found.
Ferguson (25-4) hasn’t competed since May when he collided with Justin Gaethje for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship. “El Cucuy” fell short in that bout, losing via fifth-round TKO. It was Ferguson’s first defeat since May 2012. He was riding a 12-fight winning streak.
During the UFC on ESPN 15 post-fight press conference, a media member asked what will be next for Ferguson after suffering his first loss in eight years. White revealed there is an opponent in mind for “El Cucuy.” The media member guessed that Dustin Poirier (26-6, 1 NC) is the potential opponent for Ferguson. White responded by simply saying “probably.”
MMAFighting.com later followed up on White’s comment. Sources told the outlet that talks between the two sides for an October clash have commenced. The report notes that Ferguson and Poirier appeared to be intrigued by a potential showdown.
Poirier is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Dan Hooker at UFC on ESPN 12 back in June. It was “The Diamond’s” first bout since falling short in his bid to become the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier was submitted in the third round to close out UFC 242 back in September 2019.
Taking a look at the official UFC lightweight rankings, Ferguson sits at the number three spot. Poirier is just ahead of him at number two. The two have yet to share the octagon.
It’s a matchup that could put either man right back in title contention. Nurmagomedov is scheduled to do battle with interim titleholder Gaethje at UFC 254 on October 24.
