Is There Another Date Change For Alexander Povetkin vs. Dillian Whyte 2?

There could be yet another delay in the rematch between Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte.

Back in August 2020, Povetkin turned the heavyweight division upside down. He scored a stunning fifth-round TKO victory over Whyte to capture the interim WBC Heavyweight Championship. Whyte had a mandate to fight WBC titleholder Tyson Fury but that status has gone out the window.

Whyte is set to get his chance at revenge on March 6. The rematch has been pushed back twice now due to a previous positive COVID-19 test on Povetkin’s end. Now that Povetkin has recovered, the bout is set to go down next month but there might be yet another date change.

During an interview with iFL TV, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn revealed the potential holdup with Povetkin vs. Whyte II (via Bad Left Hook).

“There is a chance it could be delayed. I don’t think it will be, the main thing is to get Dillian Whyte out of Portugal. It looks like tomorrow that may happen.”

“(Portugal is) in the red list, and the issue we’re having is the government won’t allow Dillian Whyte to isolate in the bubble, he has to isolate in a government hotel. That is impossible for Dillian Whyte to do. He could go to Spain, for example, and isolate there for 10 days, and then fly in on fight week. That’s what we’re putting into place at the moment. Small chance it could be pushed back (three) weeks to March 27, but that’s not the intention. It’s our intention to do everything we can to make sure March 6 stays intact.”

FIGHT SPORTS will keep you up to speed on whether or not the March 6 date for Povetkin vs. Whyte 2 holds up.
