Is There Mutual Interest With Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim?
Is the interest for Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim one-sided or mutual?
The WBC has approved and ordered a vacant Super-Middleweight Title bout between Canelo and Yildirim. A purse bid was planned for September 21 but it has been rescheduled for October 6. There has been a lot going on with Canelo, his lawsuit against DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions, and Oscar De La Hoya to be exact.
While Canelo deals with those issues, Yildirim is left to hope he ends up getting a title opportunity and the biggest fight of his pro boxing career against Canelo.
Yildirim’s interest in this bout is high for obvious reasons. Canelo has won world titles in multiple weight classes and is considered to be boxing’s top star. But does Canelo share the same interest.
Yildirim’s promoter Ahmet Oner told Sky Sports that he believes Canelo wants this fight.
“Yes, because of the postponement. Why should anybody ask for a postponement, if there would be no interest, in my opinion. October 6th we will know definitely more and for my side, I hope it comes through.”
Oner doesn’t appear to want to think about what would happen should Canelo be unavailable for the matchup against Yildirim.
“We are happy with our position that we are the mandatory challenger, and if it’s Canelo, it’s great. If it’s a different opponent, then we will see. We’ll go from there, but right now, I don’t know who is fighting us for the vacant title. Canelo is a big chance for us, so I let things go smooth. Let him resolve his issues, if it’s possible.”
Canelo hasn’t competed since November 2, 2019. He knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round to capture the WBO Light-Heavyweight Title. As for Yildirim, his last bout was back on February 23, 2019. He suffered a technical decision loss to Anthony Dirrell.
