Islam Makhachev Begins Training Camp For First 170-Pound Title Defense
No opponent has been announced for Islam Makhachev’s first attempt to defend his UFC welterweight title, but the champion has started his training camp regardless as he looks ahead to his expected fight in August.
Earlier this week, information was leaked surrounding Makhachev defending his title against No. 2 ranked Ian Machado Garry this August at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. This information now seems even more realistic given the confirmation that the Russian’s camp has begun.
In Garry’s most recent outing, the Irishman delivered a standout performance over former champion Belal Muhammad, which certainly answered questions in the minds of many surrounding his ability to withstand aggressive wrestling pressure. But despite Muhammad training with ‘Team Khabib’ as well, Makhachev is a completely different animal on the mats, and will certainly give Garry another kind of test, this time from a two-division UFC champion.
Despite the public speculation, no information surrounding this match has been announced by the UFC at the time of writing this.
In a recent interview, Makhachev was asked to address some rumors online that he was back in the gym and preparing to fight, to which he responded, “How does Instagram know that?”. He went on to explain in the brief interview that he these are the early stages of his fight camp, and is mostly conditioning related.
