Israel Adesanya Names One Fighter Missing From MMA GOAT List
There has been plenty of talk in regards to who is the MMA GOAT.
The topic is subjective but many feel strongly about their choices. Some names at the very top of that list are Jon Jones, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St-Pierre, and Anderson Silva. There is one name that Adesanya feels is often overlooked.
During an appearance on Submission Radio, Adesanya said that not enough people are giving Demetrious Johnson credit (h/t MMAMania.com).
“If we want to talk about Ultimate G.O.A.T., did everyone just forget about Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson? Just the perfect fighter … or near perfect.”
Johnson holds the record for the most successful consecutive UFC title defenses in the promotion’s history. The skills of “Mighty Mouse” have never been called into question but the UFC’s decision to trade him to ONE Championship for Ben Askren had to do with drawing ability. Johnson’s last bout in the UFC ended in a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo.
The MMA GOAT talk began to heat up again after Nurmagomedov’s victory over Justin Gaethje. After the fight, “The Eagle” announced his retirement and requested that he be placed at the number one spot on the official UFC pound-for-pound rankings. Nurmagomedov got his wish.
Jones, who is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, has made it clear that he doesn’t agree with the decision. “Bones” has listed his accomplishments and titles defenses compared to Khabib’s as the reason why “The Eagle” can’t be considered to be the best fighter in the world.
