Israel Adesanya: Winning UFC Light Heavyweight Title Would Be A ‘Big F*ck You’ To Jon Jones
Israel Adesanya would love nothing more than to stick it to Jon Jones.
Adesanya is the UFC Middleweight Champion with two successful title defenses but he’s already looking for “champ-champ” status. UFC President Dana White has said that Adesanya is next in line for a shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. White made the decision after Robert Whittaker turned down a title rematch.
Jones vacated the 205-pound gold after deciding to move up to the heavyweight division. Jan Blachowicz is currently the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion after stopping Dominick Reyes in the second round via TKO.
Adesanya and Jones have been involved in a nasty feud. The two have been trading nasty barbs for over a year now and things have gotten personal. It’s left many fight fans believing a showdown between “The Stylebender” and “Bones” is inevitable.
Appearing on Submission Radio, Adesanya expressed his belief that a UFC Light Heavyweight Title win would draw the ire of Jones (h/t MMAFighting.com).
“It’s just a big f*ck you to him, just to be like, I did something you couldn’t,” Adesanya said. “I mean, he cleared the division of the light heavyweight twice over and then started fighting recycled middleweights. So, don’t come at me talking about ‘move up in weight and fight’ when you can’t even do the same thing after over 10 years in the company. So, I’m actually about to do it. It’s a good fight for me to do it with.”
There is no word on when Jones will be fighting at heavyweight or who his first opponent at the weight class will be. “Bones” may have to wait for a rematch between UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou. While the bout isn’t official, UFC President Dana White has said that it’s hard to have someone skip Ngannou for the next title opportunity.
