Jack Vacates WBA Light Heavyweight Title

Badou Jack’s reign as the WBA Light Heavyweight Champion ends early, as he officially surrendered the championship earlier today.

Jack gained the championship by defeating Nathan Cleverly on Aug. 26, during the undercard for Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather. In a letter, Jack thanked the WBA for the opportunity to be champion, but chose to vacate the title. Last week, the WBA ordered a purse bid between Jack and mandatory challenger Dmitry Bivol.

Bivol will now fight the highest available contender for the vacant title.

No true explanation has been given for Jack giving up the title.
