Jake Paul Claims He Has Early Signs Of CTE
YouTube star Jake Paul says he has early signs of CTE due to his boxing endeavor.
Paul is scheduled to go one-on-one with Askren inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. The action will take place this Saturday night, April 17. It’ll be Paul’s third pro boxing match and Askren’s first.
During a virtual media day session, Paul made the claim that he’s already showing early signs of CTE through brain scans (via Bloody Elbow).
“You know, it’s a dangerous sport. And that’s why, when people question my dedication to it—it’s like, I’m showing up every single day. I’m putting my mental health on the line, my brain is on the line. Like you said, I’ve gone and gotten brain scans and have early signs of CTE. But, I love this sport and wouldn’t trade it for anything else. And I’m a fighter and people will see that. Whether it’s after Saturday night or whether it’s a year from now, they will see that I’m a fighter.”
If Paul is being honest about having early signs of CTE, he may run into trouble with getting licensed in the future. While neurologists can make a prognostication based on conversations with patients, there is no widely distributed test to detect CTE early.
When Paul steps inside the ring this weekend, he’ll be going up against a former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder. While Askren lacks pro boxing experience, he has an extensive combat sports background. Paul’s boxing victories have come against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib and former NBA star Nate Robinson.
