Jake Paul Vs. Mike Tyson Will Be An ‘Exhibition’

Mike Tyson has confirmed that his fight with Jake Paul will officially be an exhibition, albeit under modified rules.

Tyson faces Paul on July 20, his first fight since the 2020 exhibition with Roy Jones Jr. Iron Mike will enter the ring as a 58-year-old, taking on a much younger Paul at 28. Paul has been the more active fighter, having two knockout wins since last December. This did raise safety concerns, with reports that it may not get sanctioned as a professional fight. Now, the fight will go ahead as an exhibition.

“This is called an exhibition, but if you look up exhibition, you won’t see any of the laws we’re fighting under. This is a fight. I don’t think he’s faster than me. I’ve seen a YouTube video of him at [age] 16 doing weird dancing. That’s not the guy I’m fighting. This is a guy who’s really going to try and hurt me, which I’m accustomed to, and he’s going to be greatly mistaken. Right now, I’m scared to death. As the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become because it’s reality, and in reality I’m invincible,” Tyson said

The rules have yet to be confirmed. There are suggestions the fighters could wear 16-ounce gloves instead of ten-ounces to reduce the impact of the punches. It is also alleged the fight won’t be scored by judges, and both men will fight in two-minute rounds. That has raised criticism over why it is happening in the first place. Both boxers will allegedly earn over $20 million, causing Tyson to hit out at his critics.

“I’’m 58 and what? I’m getting billions of views from just talking to somebody about fighting. Everybody, even most of the athletes, they’re jealous. That’s whack. … I say in your prime you couldn’t draw a million people, man. What are you talking – you couldn’t sell out an arena. Who at 58 could sell out an 80,000-seat arena?

“Why do you think he wants to fight me and not anybody else? Everybody wants to fight him – all the boxers want to fight him. But if he fought them, the only people that will come are the people that like him. The other guys, their parents might not even come watch them. That’s just keeping it real. They’re too boring for their children to watch. It’s like watching grass grow,” Tyson stated
