Jamel Herring Beats Jonathan Oquendo, Keeps WBO Title Via DQ

Jamel Herring remains the WBO Junior-Lightweight Champion but it didn’t end how he envisioned.

Herring took on Jonathan Oquendo in the main event of a Top Rank Boxing card. The event was held inside the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the second title defense for Herring.

In the early going, Herring was looking to utilize his jab and tie Oquendo up. It’s possible that he lured his opponent into a false sense of security because Herring dropped Oquendo in the third round with a clean uppercut. That punch was finding a home for Herring.

Things got dicey in the fifth round after Herring suffered a cut over his right eye. Referee Tony Weeks ruled that it was an intentional headbutt from Oquendo that caused the cut. Herring fought on until the end of the eighth round when he could no longer see out of that eye. Herring was ruled the winner via disqualification.

In the co-headliner, Steven Nelson’s undefeated record remained intact. He stopped DeAndre Ware via sixth-round TKO. Jesse Rodriguez made short work of Janiel Rivera, scoring a first-round TKO victory. Heavyweight prospect Jared Anderson remained perfect in his pro boxing career with a fourth-round TKO win over Rodney Hernandez.
