Jamie Mitchell Dethrones Shannon Courtenay To Become New WBA Champ

Jamie Mitchell (7-0-2, 4 KO) went the distance against Shannon Courtenay (7-2, 3 KO) Saturday afternoon and won the showdown via decision to become the new WBA bantamweight titleholder.

Mitchell was, however, not extremely excited after being crowned the champion.

“It sounds very great. It sounds amazing. It feels great,” Mitchell said in the post-fight interview. “I can’t show too much emotion because I knew I was going to win the fight when I signed the contract.”

Two judges scored the title fight 96-94 and 97-93, whereas the third one declared it a draw (95-95).

Despite going home with the win, the new champ was displeased with the scorecard.

The former champion felt like she had done enough to retain the title.

“I don’t see how I lost, but I have to pay respect to her,” Courtenay said.

Courtenay was involved in a drama at the Friday weigh-in event, missing the 118-pound weight limit by 2.5lbs. She said that her menstrual cycle started unexpectedly, which caused her to gain a few pounds.

Courtenay’s promoter Eddie Hearn did not mince his words when asked about her performance.

“She’s got to get her knee looked at, she’s got to get her mind right, she’s got to improve,” Hearn said. “If she fights like that again against Jamie Mitchell, she won’t beat her.”
