Jan Blachowicz Wants Time Off Following UFC 259 Win
Jan Blachowicz is looking to take a break after retaining the UFC Light Heavyweight Title against Israel Adesanya.
This past Saturday night, March 6, Blachowicz and Adesanya shared the Octagon in the UFC 259 headliner. The action was held inside the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Adesanya was vying for “Champ-Champ” status as he already held the UFC Middleweight Championship.
Adesanya had his moments in the standup but Blachowicz showcased his defense to avoid any danger. He also put his grappling on display in the championship rounds. His ability to take Adesanya down and keep him on the mat led to his unanimous decision victory.
During the post-fight press conference, Blachowicz told reporters that he feels some time off is in order (h/t MMAJunkie.com).
“(I want a) short break – minimum half-year break. I want to spend some time with my family. I am a father. My child was just born and I don’t spend any time with him because I have to prepare for my fight. If he wants to wait, (Teixeira) will be my next opponent.”
Blachowicz and UFC President Dana White have said Glover Teixeira is deserving of the next UFC Light Heavyweight Title opportunity. Teixeira even weighed in for UFC 259 as an emergency backup. He made championship weight but he wasn’t needed for the card.
Teixeira is riding a five-fight winning streak. In that span, he’s beaten Thiago Santos, Anthony Smith, Nikita Krylov, Ion Cutelaba, and Karl Roberson. Blachowicz has also won five in a row with one successful title defense to boot.
