Jaron Ennis has multiple options as he moves forward with the momentum of his world title win in June on his back, and it seems he has his sights set on working towards undisputed titleholder status.
‘Boots’ secured both the WBO and WBA super welterweight titles with his win by corner stoppage over Xander Zayas back in June, adding an impressive 36th win to his professional career in the process.
In the past, Ennis has been linked to a highly anticipated matchup with Vergil Ortiz Jr, but their original ring meeting fell through because of the interim champion’s legal dispute with Golden Boy Promotions. Now, with Ortiz’s legal troubles behind him, the path would be clear for their originally planned matchup, but now Ennis has other thoughts.
Instead of the match with Ortiz, which was originally in the works for this past March, Ennis seems to be on the path of chasing undisputed title status at 154-pounds. He even went on to call out the likes of Sebastian Fundora, who is set to defend his WBC title against mandatory challenger Ermal Hadribeaj later this year.
“It’s still on the table but, right now, we’re collecting belts. I feel like the two guys with the belts [would make for] bigger fights right now. I feel like Fundora is a bigger fight [than Ortiz].
“Everybody wants to see that fight. Vergil Ortiz is a good fight but no one really wants to see it, because I’m going to knock him out.
“I’d rather fight the tall guy [Fundora] that y’all think is this monster, get him out of there, and then I’ll run through the whole division.”
