JDS-Blaydes, Edgar-Sandhagen Top UFC Raleigh
Two of the UFC’s top heavyweights will duke it out and top the UFC’s visit to Raleigh, North Carolina, on a card that also features the bantamweight debut of a former lightweight champion.
Per a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and Curtis Blaydes are targeted to main event UFC Raleigh on January 25.
JDS was scheduled to main event last week’s UFC Moscow event with Alexander Volkov but had to pull out due to a leg bacterial infection. He will look to rebound from a June loss to Francis Ngannou, a loss that snapped a three-fight win streak he had since a failed bid at Stipe Miocic and the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 211. Blaydes, meanwhile, will look to win his third straight after defeating Justin Willis at UFC Nashville and Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC 242.
In a separate report, Okamoto also confirmed that the co-main event of the evening will feature Frankie Edgar, who will be competing for the first time at 135 pounds, taking on Cory Sandhagen.
Edgar, who held the UFC lightweight title between 2010 and 2012, has spent the last seven years competing at featherweight, coming up short in two title fights (one world, one interim) with Jose Aldo, as well as one in his most recent bout with Max Holloway at UFC 240 in July.
Sandhagen is 12-1 in his career thus far and a perfect 5-0 in the Octagon, with his 2019 campaign including a first-round submission of Mario Bautista at UFC Brooklyn and decision wins over John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao at UFC Fort Lauderdale and UFC 241, respectively.
