Jermall Charlo continues to stoke the flames when it comes to a potential clash with David Benavidez.
Charlo is the WBC Middleweight Champion. Benavidez is the former WBC Super-Middleweight titleholder. Charlo has been mulling over potentially moving up to the 168-pound division. Many believe he’s got the size and ability to make it work.
Things have gotten heated between Charlo and Benavidez. Benavidez says he had respect for Charlo before the WBC titleholder ripped him after expressing his desire for a fight. Charlo appeared to play mind games as well, claiming he wouldn’t fight Benavidez due to his age, 24, and claiming he won’t compete against anyone who isn’t vaccinated.
During an appearance on The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer, Charlo guaranteed a knockout victory over Benavidez if the two ever share the ring (via BoxingScene.com).
“Yeah. Let’s make that fight happen. I’mma knock his little punk ass out. I promise that. I put that on everything I love.”
Charlo went as far as to say Benavidez wouldn’t last more than six rounds against him.
“I give him four rounds, five rounds. I knock him out in about five rounds, six rounds—no more. He gets hit too much. I’m powerful. I’ll explode on him. Trust me, I do my thing. I’ve been doing this all my life. Put me in there. Put me in there with… bro, I’m a lion, bro. Let’s get it.”
Charlo last competed back in September 2020. He successfully defended his WBC gold against Sergiy Derevyanchenko via unanimous decision. As for Benavidez, he is fresh off a TKO finish over Ronald Ellis in the 11th round.
