Jermall Charlo Retracts Comments About Fighting Canelo

Jermall Charlo has backtracked on his comments about boxing Canelo Alvarez.

Reports indicated Charlo was a front-runner for a Cinco De Mayo Weekend bout on May 4. Canelo announced he would face an American, leaving Charlo and then Terence Crawford as the leading names, even if David Benavidez is American since he has a Mexican background. Charlo initially announced he was facing Canelo, only to now make a U-turn.

“I haven’t even talked to Al Haymon since I last fought. So everybody that keeps talking about, ‘You’re about to fight Canelo,’ – ain’t no confirmation,” Charlo stated

According to reports, Alvarez wants a guarantee of $35 million. Crawford and Benavidez are the only possible fights to generate that amount. Alvarez has already beaten Charlo’s brother, Jermell Charlo, making the Jermall fight less appealing. Leonard Ellerbe was also clear that a Canelo-Benavidez fight was bigger than Crawford.

“I know the business. No, it’s not (bigger). It has nothing to do with whether or not somebody deserves the fight or whether they should fight — we’re just talking about the business. The Benavidez vs Canelo fight and Crawford vs Canelo, it’s no comparison… If you ask me the business, the business of which fight is bigger? The Benavidez fight is bigger. It’s a much bigger fight,” Ellerbe said
