Jermell Charlo Calls Out Canelo Alvarez
If unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez do not come to terms to meet in September, one possible challenger for Golovkin could be Jermall Charlo, the WBC interim middleweight champ and mandatory challenger to Golovkin.
Jermall’s twin brother, Jermell — the WBC light middleweight champion — has also expressed some interest in challenging Golovkin. But as reported by Boxing Scene, Jermell delivered quite the message to Alvarez, who withdrew from a long-awaited rematch with Golovkin and was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after failed drug tests.
Jermell Charlo, who defends his title against Austin Trout next week, called out Alvarez, mocking his plea of innocence for his failed drug tests, blaming them on tainted meat.
Charlo also mentioned that Golden Boy Promotions has offered him a promotion deal, which, should he sign after his title defense, could make a showdown between him and Alvarez easier. However, he wants Alvarez to return to the 154-pound division — where Alvarez has been a former WBA, WBC and WBO champion.
“Tell Canelo to stop eating that bad meat and come back down to ’54,” Jermell Charlo said. “We been wanting him.”
Alvarez and Golovkin were looking at a possible September 15 clash for their rematch, but negotiations are at an impasse over money. But with his suspension up at the end of August, Alvarez, as well as Golovkin, intends to fight whomever in September.
