Jermell Charlo Offers to Step in for Smith

A skin condition illness has forced Liam Smith to pull out of his scheduled May 12 title bout with WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Jermell Charlo.

Ali now needs an opponent to save the main event of the card at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York. And one fighter, in particular, offered his services — WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Jermell Charlo.

As reported by Bad Left Hook, Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions heard about Charlo’s offer, but feels a match of this magnitude — especially if it were a title unification match — cannot be a replacement bout.

“Can’t afford him at this late stage,” Gomez said. “You need to build a promotion for that level fight.”

Ali pulled off a shocking upset back in December, defeating Miguel Cotto to win the WBO’s 154-pound championship. Smith was scheduled to be Ali’s first title challenger.

Charlo, meanwhile, easily manhandled Erickson Lubin with a first-round knockout back in October for his second consecutive title defense and to improve to 30-0. He’s currently preparing for a June 9 title defense against Austin Trout.
