Jermell Charlo Vs. Brian Castano II Delayed Again, Charlo Isn’t Convinced Of Castano Injury
The rematch between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano has been pushed back again, and Charlo isn’t happy about it.
Mike Coppinger and Jake Donovan reported that WBO super welterweight champion Brian Castano has been forced out of their March 19 rematch due to a minor biceps tear. He is projected to be out at least four weeks, which could “severely impact” the chances of the fight happening at all.
Charlo was prepared to make his third defense of his WBC, WBA and IBF belts and get a justified result after their first fight in July 2021 ended in a controversial split draw.
The rematch was supposed to take place on February 26, but it was pushed back due to unknown reasons.
“[Two times] in a row they done tried to pull the same stunt,” Charlo posted on his Instagram channel in an immediate reaction to news of the delay. “Naw I ain’t buying it.”
Castano has been put on the clock and has been ordered by the WBO to show cause as to why he should not have to commit to an overdue mandatory title defense against Tim Tszyu.
The WBO previously agreed to delay the mandatory fight between Castano and Tsyzu, with understanding that Castano was going to fight Charlo in search of an undisputed champion.
But because of the delay, the WBO is thinking of their next move.
“Considering the preceding circumstances and Mr. Rose’s objection that the WBO Mandatory title defense is further delayed, he requests that this Committee proceeds with the immediate enforcement of the WBO Mandatory title defense between Brian Castano and Tim Tszyu accordingly,” the WBO Championship Committee informed TGB, Charlo and Castano’s manager.
“TGB Promotions has 24 hours upon issuance of this notice letter to “Show Cause” why the WBO World Championship Committee shall not order the enforcement of the Mandatory Title Defense between Brian Castano and Tim Tszyu, and order negotiations immediately between the parties.”
Tszyu was going to fight on the undercard of Charlo-Castano.
Plans are unclear when the rematch can be rescheduled.
