Jermell Charlo Vs. Brian Castano Rematch Officially Scheduled For May
Fans will finally be able to see an undisputed super-welterweight champion this spring.
The rematch between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano was officially announced for May 14 in Carson, California.
“Charlo and Castaño have proven once again that they are true warriors by going directly into this rematch that fans across the world demanded after the conclusion of their dramatic and unforgettable first fight,” Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions, said.
The rematch will help settle the split decision draw that was the result of their first thrilling encounter in July 2021.
It was originally supposed to happen on March 19, but Castano pulled out due to a bicep injury. Charlo didn’t believe Castano’s injury.
At the same time, the WBO was close to forcing a mandatory shot for challenger Tim Tszyu, but Castano agreed to the sanctioning body’s “show cause” of his injury, and they allowed him to move forward with the rematch.
Tszyu, who is coming off a unanimous decision win against Terrell Gausha, was reportedly promised to take on the winner of the Charlo-Castano rematch.
“I’m the unified champ and I’ve got business to finish,” Charlo said.
Charlo, 31, currently holds the WBC, WBA, IBF and Ring magazine super welterweight titles. Castano is the WBO titleholder.
“This is champion vs. champion, just like it should be,” Castano added.
“The first fight was a great war. The rematch will be no different, but this time I won’t leave it in the judges’ hands. This is my era, and I will prove it.”
