John Ryder Offers To Replace Billy Joe Saunders To Fight Canelo
John Ryder is offering to be on standby in case Billy Joe Saunders refuses to fight Canelo Alvarez on May 8.
Canelo and Saunders are expected to meet on Saturday night but there’s a last-minute issue. Saunders has made it clear that he feels the ring size is too small. His father, Tom, made the claim to iFL TV that the fight is off. Canelo insists the fight is still on as Saunders must honor the contract.
Ryder revealed to BoxingNewsOnline that he is preparing to fly out to Dallas and is ready to serve as a replacement opponent if he is needed.
“Put it this way, it’s a bit earlier than scheduled but I’m definitely going to pack my gum shield and protector just in case. That’s the sport we’re involved in. Especially with COVID, how many times have you seen fights pulled last minute with positive tests coming through and main events falling through? I’m going there tomorrow regardless, what’s an extra couple of ounces for a protector and a gumshield? I’m taking my gloves and my boots anyway. What’s the saying – have gloves, will travel. That’s me.”
Ryder has gone 5-1 in his last six outings. The lone loss in that span was against Callum Smith, who was beaten by Canelo back in December. in his last outing, Ryder scored a unanimous decision win over Mike Guy.
Time will tell whether or not Ryder will be needed come fight night. The action will emanate from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
