Johnson To Fight Monaghan On Bivol-Smith Undercard
Former light heavyweight title challenger Callum Johnson is looking to get back into title contention with his next fight, set to take place in March.
Johnson will face Sean Monaghan on the undercard of the March 9 Matchroom Boxing USA card taking place in Verona, New York. The fight will mark Johnson’s second consecutive bout in the United States.
The 33-year-old Johnson traveled to Chicago for his last fight, which was also a Matchroom Boxing USA show. Johnson was knocked out by IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev in four rounds on that October 2018 fight, snapping Johnson’s 17-fight win streak.
Monaghan will look to get his second win in his last four fights after winning his first 28 pro bouts. Monaghan lost his perfect record when he was lost to Marcus Browne by TKO in 2017 and most recently is coming off a loss to Sullivan Barrera this past November by unanimous decision.
There are two title fights set to take place on the March 9 show. The first is Maurice Hooker defending his WBO super lightweight title against Mikkel LesPierre. The second one is Dmitry Bivol defending his WBA light heavyweight title against Joe Smith Jr., the man who beat Bernard Hopkins in Hopkins’ final fight as a pro boxer.
