Jon Jones Claims Close Victory Over Dominick Reyes – February 8, 2020 (This Day In MMA History)
Jon Jones pulled off a close, or controversial as some fans called it, win over Dominick Reyes two years ago.
Jones defeated Reyes by unanimous decision with scorecards of 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46, all in his favor. With the victory, he retained his light heavyweight title in the co-main event of UFC 247. The results were booed by the crowd when it was announced.
“I do feel disrespected,” Reyes said at the time after the fight. “I know I won that fight. … I made Jon Jones look like just a man. I brought the fight to him.”
Reyes was the only man who out struck Jones in his 22 career fights at the time. Reyes landed 116 significant punches to Jones’ 104.
“He landed some hard hits. The fans like it when they see me get hit — it doesn’t happen very often,” Jones said.
“But at the same time, I landed some takedowns. I got his back on more than one occasion. … A hard-earned victory but a victory.”
Jones has not fought since.
