Jon Jones Confirms His Time At Light Heavyweight Is Over

Jon Jones reminded his followers that they hadn’t seen the last of him.

The former light heavyweight champion tweeted early Tuesday morning that he still plans on following through with making his debut in the heavyweight division, even if he hasn’t been in the octagon for two years.

“My candle for Light Heavyweight blew out, it showed in my last fight, instead of being discouraged by a bad performance, I’m stoked about this new season,” Jones tweeted.

“New energy. My time at [Light Heavyweight] was over, I see that more clear today than ever.

“I’ve been imagining it for over two years now, I genuinely believe winning this Heavyweight championship is in my destiny,” he continued.

“It’s already been written. I just need to keep my nose in the dirt for now and keep working, everything else will take care of itself.”

Jones was one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC.

He debuted in the promotion in 2008 and didn’t take too long to become the youngest champion in UFC history. He defeated Mauricio Rua at the age of 23 in 2011.

The now 34-year-old became the most dominant in the light heavyweight division, which is where he holds UFC records including most title defenses, most wins and longest win streak, to name a few.

He is a former two-time light heavyweight champion, which he held from 2011 to 2015 and then 2018 to 2020. He last fought Dominick Reyes where he scored a controversial unanimous decision win.

Not too long after he vacated the belt with the intention of moving up to heavyweight.

But since his hiatus, Jones has been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, arrested and parted ways with his longtime gym, JacksonWink MMA.

It’s unclear when he will return, but UFC President Dana White previously said he’s looking to get a heavyweight debut fight for Jones this year.
