Jones-Gustafsson II Eyed For UFC 232

After both Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson made it known that they want a rematch of their 2013 showdown, the UFC is looking to set a rematch for December 29th at UFC 232.

In speaking to ESPN on Wednesday, Dana White made it known that a Gustafsson and Jones showdown at T-Mobile Arena is in play and would be a light heavyweight title fight.

At the moment, Daniel Cormier is the undisputed light heavyweight AND heavyweight champion, after defeating Stipe Miocic at UFC 226, and Cormier has made it clear he wants to defend both belts before he retires next year on his 40th birthday.

While Cormier welcomes defending both titles, his focus is his next opponent Brock Lesnar, who he’s facing in 2019 for the heavyweight title, leaving some to wonder if the UFC will strip Cormier.

“It’s one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights in history and I expect the rematch to be the same!!!!” White said of the potential December 29th showdown.

Jones and Gustafsson would have a fight of the year caliber title matchup at UFC 165, with Jones taking a unanimous decision victory, and many wanting to see an eventual rematch.

If signed, this would be the first fight for Jon Jones since his failed drug test at UFC 214 in 2017, when he defeated Cormier for the light heavyweight title. Following an arbitration agreement, Jones was given a 15-month suspension, backdated to the date of the test, allowing him to return as soon as October 28th.

Gustafsson has not fought since defeating Glover Teixeira in May of 2017, with a fifth-round stoppage.

This week, Jones also mentioned to RT Sport the possibility of facing Gustafsson in his comeback fight.

“I’ve been hearing about the possibility that Alexander Gustafsson will be the first person I fight when I get back, which I’m excited about,” Jones said. “A lot of people feel like he beat me the first time we fought, which didn’t happen. It was close, but he didn’t beat me.”

If signed, the fight would be a co-headliner with the UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in a super fight.
