Jones Issues First Statement Following DWI Arrest
After keeping contact with the outside world to a minimum, Jon Jones has finally released a statement following last week’s events.
The UFC light heavyweight Champion was arrested for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a weapon and possession of an open container. With a bond arraignment court date set for April 9, Jones pled guilty and agreed to be placed under a type of house arrest. He will also reportedly be required to complete community service, as well as paying hefty fines. Jones has since released a statement to the public, thanks to his rep Denise White.
“Thank you all for your continued love and support and please take care of yourselves.”
Albuquerque police responded to reports of a gunshot, and found Jones, who stated he was interacting with the homeless. As seen on the bodycam footage, Jones did poorly on the DWI sobriety tests. In his car was a handgun, a half-drunken bottle of alcohol and traces of marijuana. Jones stated he felt stir-crazy and wanted to take a drive. Just a few days before, Jones was telling people to do their part and stay inside as a result of the coronavirus.
This is just the most recent situation Jones has been in when it comes to the law. In 2012, Jones was arrested and plead guilty of a DUI after driving into a pole in Binghamton. In 2015, Jones was involved in a hit-and-run after driving through a red light and crashing into two cars, with a pregnant woman being one of the individuals. He pled guilty to that as well. This past July, Jones was charged with battery that involved a cocktail waitress at a strip club. He pleaded no-contest.
Jones is also used to being very open about his relationship with alcohol and drugs. He is known for his use of marijuana and cocaine, which has negatively affected his life in and out of the octagon.
The UFC has yet to release its own statement on Jones and whether there will be further consequences. A judge must first approve the plea deal stated above. Jones last fought in two big fights that took a toll on his body: Thiago Santos (July) and Dominick Reyes (February). Due to his current situation and the coronavirus, it is unknown when he will get a chance to fight again.
