Jones Responds to Velasquez’s Claim He Can Beat Him
What would happen if we one day saw a bout featuring current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones taking on former two-time heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez?
Velasquez, who returns to the Octagon for the first time in over two years on Sunday at UFC Phoenix, was asked about this potential matchup by TMZ Sports. Jones has previously teased a move to heavyweight, and at one point — after his UFC 214 fight with Daniel Cormier — called out Brock Lesnar, who Velasquez defeated back at UFC 121 in November 2010 to claim his first UFC title.
Velasquez said he feels like he’s good enough to hand Jones his first true defeat in his MMA career, and those words made their way to Jones.
Jones responded to the comments on Instagram, warning Velasquez that his move to heavyweight is coming soon if he wants to see if his comments hold up.
But first, Jones is focused on his upcoming light heavyweight title defense against Anthony Smith, which headlines the next UFC pay-per-view, UFC 235, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 2.

Your confidence is going to have to be on lock in order to beat me my guy. Can’t be talking about “I think I can.” I feed off picograms of self-doubt, and I can smell it from miles away. 🦁 For now let’s just focus on the fights ahead of us. My heavyweight days are inevitable.
