Jones Would Get Drunk Week Before Bout

Jon Jones had a unique way of preparing himself for bouts, which was more of a crutch in case he lost.

During his appearance on a recent edition of Joe Rogan’s podcast, Jones informed Rogan that he used to drink heavily one week prior to his bouts. He claimed to use it as a way to have something to blame just in case he lost.

"I had this crazy thing that I would do where I would party one week before every fight," Jones said. "And I did it throughout my whole career. And it was stupid, but it was this mental crutch that I had. My logic was, if this guy were to beat me somehow, I can look myself in the mirror and say the reason I lost is because I got hammered the week before the fight."

Jones recalled one bout — his defense against Alexander Gustafsson — where things got really out of control, and it may have nearly cost him the title. He also mentioned that the first bout he stopped doing this, his most recent bout against Ovince Saint Preux — saw him criticized for not being his usual "pushing the pace" self.

Jones was stripped of his light heavyweight championship in April 2015 due to his involvement in a hit-and-run incident, and he is currently serving a suspension from USADA due to failed pre-fight drug test.

"My relationship with alcohol was never healthy, and I never went through a period in which I had a mature, healthy, responsible relationship with it," Jones admitted.
