Jorge Masvidal Thinks He Knows Why Fight Vs Colby Covington Is UFC 272 Headliner
The main event at UFC 272 will feature a fight between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington. It’s a rare occurrence when a non-title fight tops a pay-per-view event.
Nonetheless, Masvidal believes that his star power, not Covington’s, has pushed this fight to the main event level.
“Definitely about (my star power), though he’ll try to take credit for it,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie.
“He hasn’t broke, in all his pay-per-views combined, 500,000 pay-per-views. I don’t have to say what I’ve sold. Everybody knows. So it’s definitely solely because of my star power, nothing to do with his.”
Masvidal and Covington have a long history together.
They were housemates, friends and training partners all rolled into one. They got into a fight and have been trash-talking each other ever since. They are both welterweight championship contenders, and a fight between them seemed unavoidable.
Both fighters have lost to champion Kamaru Usman twice, and both are aiming to recapture their title shot.
Masvidal’s personality and impressive octagon victories have helped him acquire popularity in recent years. Covington is also one of the roster’s most well-known, if not the most popular, fighters.
