Jose Zepeda’s Replacement Opponent For July 7 ESPN Fight Revealed
While earlier than expected, another fight will have to be altered for a Top Rank-produced boxing card.
Recently, Jose Zepeda’s July 7th fight against Ivan Baranchyk was nixed as a result of the latter suffering from a rib injury. Now, with just a few days notice, Boxing Scene was the first to confirm that Kendo Castaneda will be taking Baranchyk’s place.
Castaneda (17-1) is coming off of a loss back in February against Yomar Alamo. It was the first loss of his career, for the WBO NABO Super-Lightweight Title. He was booked for another fight in July for Top Rank, against an unnamed opponent. The 26-year-old made his professional debut in 2012.
Zepeda (31-2, 2NC) is 1-1 in his last three fights with one no-contest. He last fought in September, beating Jose Pedraza via unanimous decision. The 31-year-old is looking to get back into title contention following a loss to WBC Light-Welterweight Champion Jose Ramirez in February 2019.
According to Boxing Scene, Zepeda is looking to reschedule a bout against Baranchyk, a former IBF Light-Welterweight contender and current WBA Inter-Continental Light-Welterweight Champion.
This is just the latest fight card to be changed by Top Rank. Mikaela Mayer became the first active boxer to test positive for COVID-19, forcing her out of her bout against Helen Joseph on June 9. Chris Zavala was also forced out of his bout with Eddie Vazquez on June 16. Mikkel LesPierre’s trainer recently tested positive for the virus, resulting in his bout with Jose Pedraza to be scrapped the day of the fight. Jamel Herring tested positive for the virus, forcing him out of his planned July 2 bout.
Other fights on the July 7 card, on ESPN, will be Andy Vences v. Luis Alberto Lopez and Andres Cortes v. Alejandro Salinas.
