Joseph Parker Refuses to Change His Team
At 26 years old, 24-2 in his career and one reign as WBO heavyweight champion, Joseph Parker has faced quite a lot of criticism over the last 18 months or so.
Parker went unbeaten in 24 straight fights, winning the then-vacant WBO title with a win over Andy Ruiz in December 2016. He made two defenses of the title — both of which were deemed unimpressive or lackluster performances — before losing his title and unbeaten streak to Anthony Joshua back on March 31, also in a heavily-criticized bout. Parker suffered his second loss a few weeks ago, losing via decision to Dillian Whyte.
Some in the boxing community have called upon Parker to switch up his team. Parker is promoted by David Higgins of Duco Events and coached by Kevin Barry. But Parker says he has no plans on doing such a thing, committed loyally to those around him.
“I feel like we have a strong team,” Parker told Sky Sports. “I wouldn’t be in the position that I am today if I didn’t have the team behind me. I respect everyone’s opinion. I respect what they say, but I’m not going around telling people they have to change this and that when something happens.”
