Josh Taylor Vs. Teofimo Lopez Preliminary And Undercard Live Results, Recaps: Xander Zayas Dominates With Unanimous-Decision Win Over Ronald Cruz

Josh Taylor defends his WBO super-lightweight title when he takes on Teofimo Lopez in Madison Square Garden, New York.

Taylor is the favorite, having been the undisputed champion before vacating three of the belts in order to avoid his mandatory obligations.

Prior to this, the Scot defended his undisputed titles with a split-decision win over Jack Catterall. While that may have been the case, the boxing community was convinced that Taylor had come second best.

With that being said, Taylor has plenty to prove. Much in the same way, Lopez has not looked the same since his loss to George Kambosos Jr.

His last fight was a win over Sandor Martin, but the performance failed to satisfy the critics. As such, the fight is seen as an opportunity for both stars to redeem themselves.

You can see the prelim card from 6:15pm ET/11:15 pm BST. As for the main card, it is expected to begin at 10 pm ET / 3 am BST.

Co-main Event: Xander Zayas vs. Ronald Cruz – Super Welterweight

The first round began as Zayas immediately floored Cruz with a counter right hand. Despite getting up, Cruz found himself at a significant disadvantage right from the start as Zayas’ height and reach proved crucial as the latter took a 10-8 round.

Zayas took the initiative and started to work behind his jab. Cruz was pressing forward, but Zayas was proving too much for him to handle. He got past his opponent’s guard, countering with precision and unleashing devastating combinations.

Cruz started the third much better, as he caught Zayas with a powerful right hand. However, Zayas quickly retaliated with a swift one-two combo, leaving Cruz bewildered.

Zayas’ punches were more accurate as he maneuvered around Cruz’s jabs. Although Cruz managed to land another decent right hand, it was not enough to keep Zayas at bay.

The start of round four saw Zayas deliver a massive right hand that snapped Cruz’s head back, but he took it well, as it was all one-sided near the halfway stage.

Cruz began to get more aggressive, snapping his jab with precision. Zayas was momentarily slowed down by Cruz’s sharp jabs, but he quickly regained his momentum, as Zayas managed to land enough combos to secure the round.

As the fight entered the championship rounds, Zayas still landed more significant shots, including a sharp uppercut and a powerful left to the body.

In the seventh, Zayas pushed Cruz onto the ropes with a jab and a right hand to the chin, but the latter held on. In truth, it was all one-way traffic as Zayas walked away with a unanimous-decision win.

Official Result: Xander Zayas def. Ronald Cruz via a unanimous decision: 80-71, 80-71 and 80-71

Robson Conceicao vs Nicolas Polanco – Junior Lightweight

Conceicao displayed his dominance right from the get-go. He landed a series of left hands that kept Polanco at bay, as Conceicao took the first round with ease while the former failed to land a single shot.

As round two commenced, Polanco managed to land a powerful right straight on Conceicao’s chin. The latter remained unfazed and continued to throw a flurry of punches.

Despite some fancy footwork, Polanco was unable to dodge all of the incoming shots. Then suddenly, an accidental head butt sent Polanco tumbling to the canvas, causing the referee to pause the bout.

A short while after, the referee called an end to the bout, citing a no-contest, due to an accidental headbutt.
